The City of Vineland owns and operates the municipal water utility which services approximately 16,000 residential and commercial customers via 265 miles of water main infrastructure.
The City of Vineland takes every precaution to provide customers with safe, high-quality drinking water and complies with all State and Federal requirements that protect water quality. New Jersey legislation A5343/S3459, signed into law in July 2021, requires water utilities to notify customers about service line materials and maintain a public inventory of service line records on both the public and private sides. The law also requires the replacement of any lead service lines by July 2031 and expands the definition of a lead service line to include certain galvanized steel service lines.
Water service lines are small pipes that carry water from Vineland Water Utility’s water mains, located in the streets, to individual homes and buildings. Service lines can be made of plastic, brass, copper, cast iron, ductile iron, lead, or galvanized steel (which can have lead). In Vineland, most services are made of galvanized steel, plastic, or copper piping.
Service line ownership is shared between Vineland Water Utility and property owners. Vineland Water Utility owns the service line from the water main in the street to the curb stop, typically at the property line or in the sidewalk. The property owner is responsible for the service line from the property line or in the sidewalk to the meter inside the home, regardless of where the meter pit is. Vineland has excellent records of service line material for the utility-owned portion of the service line, and limited records for the customer-owned portion.
Rest assured that, as of the publication of this website, the City of Vineland does not have lead service lines in its drinking water system, and we continue to take proactive measures to ensure high-quality drinking water is delivered to customers. Water leaving the City of Vineland water treatment plant does not contain lead, and the City’s water mains do not add lead to the drinking water
